One of the most ancient of languages, Greek is a branch of the Indo-European languages and is native to the southern Balkans. There are over 34 centuries of written records in Greek. The Greek alphabet originated from the Phoenicians and is the root language of Cyrillic, Coptic and Latin writing systems. Classic epic poems were written in Greek like the Odyssey and Iliad as well as works by Aristotle and The New Testament.

Since the 3rd millennium B.C., Greek has been spoken in the Balkan Peninsula. One of the oldest written languages in the world, Greek writings were found on the island of Crete in 1400 B.C. The Phoenician alphabet, with little change, is still used in Greece today. The language has been assimilated into languages of many other cultures and many English words are derived from Greek as well as used in medical terminology.

Over 13 million people speak Greek in Greece and Cyprus. There are Greek-speaking areas in other countries of the world such as Armenia, Lebanon, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, Egypt and southern Italy. Nearly everyone in Greece speaks Greek with the exception of Cyprus where Turkish is the official language.

Learning a new language requires memorization and using mnemonics can help you. This method links to everyday items in your world like a room or a house. You connect images with words in order to memorize them. Aside from utilizing a language course, another fun method to try is to watch old Greek movies with subtitles.

Another technique that is used to learn language is to study the most common 100 words in the language giving you about half of what you need to know to converse. Another technique used is image coding. With this style of learning you attach words to things and visualize what the word is, for instance you would learn the word green and associate it with a park.

There is also foreign language software you can acquire to use on your own that simulates a country’s environment using native speakers and has interactive activities you can do. Labeling everyday items with the Greek word for them will acquaint you with that word over and over until you automatically refer to an item, such as a chair, in Greek very comfortably. Reading children’s books will give you an idea of the syntax of the language and you can progress to harder and harder books.

In order to learn greek you have to make the commitment to either attend class or use whatever other tools are at your disposal. Immersing yourself in the language is the easiest way to learn, traveling to Greece would be the best way to learn the language if you can afford to go. Whatever method you choose, you must be diligent in practicing the language and have a passion for learning and understanding the culture and the people. Greek is an ancient language that weaves through many other languages and medical terms throughout the world.
