Graphic Design & The Role Of Oscar Wilde
By the end of the 19th century, graphic illustrators were utilizing shape, pattern and design to enhance their work. The man whose influence changed the way modern graphic designers look at a page and who introduced those elements was merely 26 years old when he passed away. This man conceived his own intensely personal perception of the art nouveau method. His interpretation of the style was so haunting, artists have continued in their attempts to copy it throughout the 20th century. As a person looking for graphic design outsourcing you should visit that site.
Oscar Wilde played a major role in the propagation of the Art Nouveau style, despite being a controversial personality and more directly associated with literature over art. He believed that art should not be limited by ethical or moral concerns. Oscar Wilde decided to choose this special young artist to illustrate a certain story which was both perverse and exotic. Beardsley favored elegant, curving lines, organic, botanically inspired shapes, lacy interlocking patterns and elongated figures in his illustrations of Wilde’s written stories.
His work was made distinctive by a spectacular give and take between black and white. He employs huge planes and borders or alternatively darkness that contrasts with fragile patterns that play on a white surface. His page is typically asymmetrical; movements are developed with big, not broken sinuous curves. While the main figures in these drawings are usually defined by outlines alone, the objects that surround them are usually more visually complicated. It is the reciprocity between the straightforward and the complex that bolsters Wilde’s work and empowers it.
A number of late 19th century design professionals were inspired by items imported from Japan and also by a rejuvenated fondness for early Renaissance and medieval artwork. Wilde’s drawings ran in numerous famous and popular publications of the time. This led to widespread admiration and appreciate of his work in both the United States and throughout Europe. Artists imitated and copied his work at every opportunity. Many of his pieces have been reproduced as prints and posters to be hung on the wall. By the end of the 1800s, commercial ad imagery and poster art began to divide into separate forms of art. Posters shined in color, unlike books, which were printed in black and white. Artists learned and developed their talent at catching the public’s eye with large, bright and impressive graphic works. If this image was advertising an event or a product, the accompanying text was usually very simple and quick. Simple, flat shapes depicted in strong colors worked best for attracting a person’s attention so artists incorporated these ideals into their finished pieces. Much like an Impressionist painting, his lines would be somewhat fractured and hesitant. This gives his work the honor of being labeled as the forerunner of the classic art nouveau design poster.
There was another illustrator, who is thought of as the creator of the more proper art nouveau poster, who used more fluid contours and much stronger outlines. Slender young female figures in flowing, classically-inspired gowns and long, loose hair was the mainstay of this style. Mythic creatures and other fantasy motifs were often incorporated into these illustrations. The female figure was also often elegantly depicted in compositions made up of several narrow strips in a fashion that became quite popular. The intricate patterns were inspired by many diverse cultures such as Celtic motifs, Japanese wood cuts, Hebrew lettering, Arab and Moorish decorations, Byzantine mosaics and simple fold art.
Due to the numerous books and reprint of their work, you can easily enjoy the graphic design talents of these many artists from the turn of the century. Certain dealers specialize in selling late 19th century and early 20th century poster art. These can generally be found by attending larger antique shows. These original pieces, in good condition, have been known to sell for thousands of dollars.
