From Buccaneers To Beaches – The History Of The Caribbean
Although everyone is familiar with the phrase “Pirates of the Caribbean”, many don’t appreciate that its origin was all too real. Given the relaxed and friendly atmosphere enjoyed by visitors to the Caribbean, it seems incredible that piracy and bloodshed ever took place in the area.
Caribbean holidays are normally all about relaxing on the beach in the sunshine, with ample provision for watersports should you like diving or skiing. However the islands of the Caribbean have a rich and varied history, so if you fancy exploring the culture a bit deeper than the local bars, shops and parades, then there is a wealth of dramatic information to uncover.
Antigua holidays give you the chance to rediscover the marine traditions that first secured the island as the key point in the colonial ambitions for the islands. Lord Horatio Nelson’s dockyard at English Harbour is now a national park, and you can see why the great reefs were chosen to screen the British squadrons from enemy fleets. The maritime tradition continues to run deep in Antigua, and in addition to the skilled fishermen on the island, it’s also home to several world-class sailing events.
St Lucia holidays let you play history detective with another one of the islands with a colourful past. Featuring a drive-in volcano, hot springs and a fascinating glimpse into the banana trade, it’s hard to believe this island was fought over fiercely by the English and French and changed ownership over a dozen times. That’s even before we get onto the pirates, buccaneers, freebooters and privateers that plied the waters around the Caribbean until the late 18th Century. Originating as privateers, captains were given political license to attack ships by countries chiefly opposed to the Spanish Empire, stealing gold from treasure flotillas and sacking Spanish ports and towns in the area. This privateering soon got out of hand and a lucrative, if usually short-lived career could be made by attacking the rich merchant vessels using the new trade routes through the Caribbean. This was eventually stamped out by the navy after the various wars in 17th and 18th Century Europe settled long enough for fleets to interdict the pirate vessels.
