Learn Greek And Hebrew
2006
In order to read the Bible in its entirety in its original form, I would need to learn Hebrew and Koine Greek?
I would like to read the Bible in its original writing. Would learning Hebrew and Koine Greek be the correct way to do this?
You would need to learn three and a half languages. Most of the Old Testament is written in Hebrew, but the book of Job is in a very strange dialect of Hebrew, perhaps Edomite.
The book of Daniel is mostly written in Aramaic as so are large portions of Ezra.
The New Testament is entirely in koine Greek.
Quibbling about “original” as some other answerers do, is just silly. We don’t have the author’s original version of any ancient text. You obviously mean by “original” to say “the supposedly oldest versions in the original languages”. Some people really can’t understand why anyone would want to read Old Norse, Old English, Old French, Latin, Greek or Sanskrit material in the original tongues.
Of course, you will be, in the beginning dependent on what scholars think these texts mean, but scholars often disagree. It is helpful, in an discipline involving old language, to at least be able to decypher enough of it to understand the arguments of scholars.
