Will humanity ever beable to live in a peaceful and tolerant world, free from suffering?
As far as we know humanity has always been living in constant conflict. Whether its killing a neighbouring ‘caveman’ to steal his food, or waging war for precious resources – like the greeks, romans and currently most of the west – or having created a society ravaged with poverty, disease and famine, such as most of the african continent – an abandoned relic of past colonial powers. It seems that at a most basic level this is caused by the need for survival but it also has something to do with greed and a strive for power. Will humanity ever beable to finally learn from the mistakes of the past and beable to live in a completely peaceful and tolerant world? Or is this just a pipe dream that we can only imagine in our minds? If you think it is possible then how do you imagine this can be achieved? If you think its impossible then what is it about us that is stopping what I assume most of us actually want to occur?
As overcrowding and competition for scarce resources intensifies,the hostility, anger and conflict will increase. Population increase will be the single main factor in the growing struggles between the haves and the have-nots, and the next major war may very well be over control and use of water. Attempts to stem population growth will backfire, as in China where it is now reported that the gender ratio has been skewed by state attempts to control population by a “one family, one child” policy. The Chinese preference for a son has resulted in most families aborting female fetuses, resulting in mismatched birth rates as high as 130 males per 100 females. The lack of marriageable women could result in huge social upheavals and strife in China. Such factors may become all too common as attempts to curb runaway population growth have entirely unwanted effects. So the strife, struggle, upheavals, wars and famines will get worse, not better, until some all-consuming plague or famine wipes out half the earth’s population.
