Leather Jackets – A Guide For Buyers
When it comes to making a good impression, there aren’t many better options for a man than a stylish leather jacket. The leather jacket has been the staple of Western men’s fashion for decades and is available in many different styles. The classic leather motorcycle jacket gives an air of fresh macho intimidation and exerts a cool, relaxed look while the long leather trench-coat, often associated with Gothic subculture, can look dark, sleek and enticing.
The range of different types of leather is simply staggering. Nappa leather, for example, is the highest quality and most expensive type of leather. The lightweight, supple nature of nappa leather allows the wearer to wear it for long periods of time without discomfort. Nubuck leather is soft and velvety, giving a vintage look, while hide leather is thicker and heavier, not to mention cheaper to buy and easier to get hold of. Most high street leather jackets are made from thinly sliced hide leather in order to sacrifice quality in the name of big profits.
Of course, budget is very important. If you can afford to stretch to the upper end of your budget, high grade nappa leather jackets are available in excess of $500. This extremely high grade of leather is well worth the money if you can afford it. If your budget is at the lower end of the scale, hide leather may suit but is heavy and often uncomfortable if worn for long periods of time. The classic black leather jacket remains the most popular color of leather, as it has done for many years. Some men opt for brown colored jackets in order to attain a vintage look, while red is a popular color for women. Leather coloring is achieved either by using aniline dyes on higher grades of leather or surface dyeing on lower grades. Surface dyeing helps hide blemishes in lower grade leather while aniline dyes give a varnished effect to high grade leather.
Leather jackets should always be cared for. After all, leather is a fresh animal product. A well-cared for jacket will be far less prone to ripping and cracking and will look fresh for years to come. You should apply a leather protector regularly in order to keep the leather waterproof. You will also want to apply leather conditioner in order to prevent the leather from cracking. If the leather is kept supple and in good condition, the jacket will look new for many years.
