Learn Spanish In Spain

learn spanish in spain
How come in school I learn Spanish from Mexico and not Spanish from Spain?

My entire life in school, except for one school i’ve attended where Spanish-Spanish was tought, I’ve only been taught Spanish from Mexico. I think this is outrageous and quite dumb. It’s equivalent of learning French from Montreal instead of French from Ffrance. It’s SPANISH, from SPAIN, it’s not Mexican. The headquarters of the Spanish language are in Spain. I like learning vosotros, Spanish culture and I can never learn this in college, high school (exception of one school), middle school or elementary school.

Why is this?

I have ran into this type of confrontation with my fellow Spanish teacher colleagues (I teach Spanish and French). I think that we teachers of Spanish like to think that the students will encounter more Spanish speakers here in the United States from Mexico, rather than Spain… The same way with French. We tend to teach phrases from France rather than Quebec in Canada. Although we teach a lot of grammar from Mexico rather than Spain, but in my classes, I teach the kids the “vosotros” form of the verb, just to keep it in the back of their minds, just in case my students ever travel to Spain. The same way with French.

The way that I see it, it doesn’t matter where the language originates, or whether it says “Spanish” or “French” as long as we speak the universal language of all of the countries that speak those languages. Thats the most important part, in the end.
