Recommended Way To Learn A Language

recommended way to learn a language
What is the best way to learn Gaelic Irish???? The best route to take to learn a foreign language.?

I speak English and I would love to learn real Gaelic Irish. What is the best way to go about it? I don’t have the means to employ someone but I can afford to buy a program of some sort. What do you recommend. I have heard of Rosetta Stone??

Well, the very best way to learn Irish Gaelic is to spend a summer in the Gaeltacht (an Irish speaking part of Ireland) while at the same time taking Irish language classes there. By the end of the summer you would be reasonably fluent.

The next best way is to find a class in your area that is being taught by a fluent native speaker (or a VERY proficient learner). There is really no replacement for an actual teacher who can answer your questions and help you with pronunciation. A class also puts you in touch with other people who are actively learning the language.

If you can’t spend a summer in a Gaeltacht and if there is no class in your area, you could try finding a fluent native speaker in your town who is willing to teach you the language privately. It will take a lot of time and effort but you can definitely learn the language this way.

If you can’t do any of the things that I mentioned, then you can always learn the language on your own. There are 3 major dialects of Irish Gaelic and also “standard” Irish which is taught in school but is not spoken in any Irish speaking community. I recommend choosing a dialect and sticking with it until you become pretty much fluent. Here is a link to Wikipedia that gives a pretty good run-down of the Irish language and the different dialects:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_language

By the way, all dialects of Gaelic are considered to be correct and of equal status so you can’t make a wrong decision :)

I live in a place where there are no classes nor any Irish speakers at all so I’m learning on my own. I worked through Rosetta Stone last year and learned a lot from it. The people who read the words and dialogs are all native speakers from Munster but once in a while they throw in some standard Irish. If you decide to go with Munster Irish, there is an online class called GaelTalk – Here’s the link:

http://www.gaeltalk.net/

You can click on the “Personal Focus” section and then click on “Sample Lessons” to see the first lesson (which is free). There are sound files, a glossary, a grammar section, etc. Like I said, the first lesson is free so you can start learning the language right away :)

Once you start becoming more fluent, you can watch the Irish language t.v. station TG4 (try to ignore the English sub-titles) and listening to the Irish language radio station Radio na Gaeltachta. There are also lots of books and songs that will help you to immerse yourself in the language.

Best of luck to ya!
