Graphic Design : A History

By the end of the 19th century, graphic illustrators were utilizing shape, pattern and design to enhance their work. The man who used those same elements and actually changed the way that graphic designers looked at a page, died at the age of only 26 years. Even though his lifetime was short, he managed to develop his very own, highly personalized, interpretation of the entire art nouveau style which many artists have been trying to duplicate at various times throughout the 20th century. Oscar Wilde was considered one of the most controversial, important literary figures of his time, who believed art was unto itself, who championed the idea of having a myriad of artistic styles, and didn’t think art should ever be judged based on ethical or moral concerns. Wilde chose this influential young artist to illustrate a certain story which is both exotic and perverse. The story was developed with menacing eroticism, intelligent distortions, and elegant lines.

His work features dramatic inter-relationships of black and white. The delicate patterns created on a white background are strongly contrasted with the large borders and other areas of darkness. His page is most often asymmetrical, and his movements are developed by big, unbroken meandering curves. Oscar places figures in his renderings constructed of simple outlines. However, the figure’s hairdos are intricate and elaborate. The items the figures hold are complex as well. The power of his art was created by the interweaving of simple elegance and complicated precision.

The Japanese imports, along with a renewed appeal of early Renaissance decorating and Medieval Arts, proved to be the inspiration for a number of designers at the close of the 1800′s. The young designer’s work was copied far and wide in Europe and over the pond in the United States, thus giving him great fame from his illustrations, which appeared in many popular publications. Framed prints and posters, reproductions of his work, can be purchased today. Obtain further advice on crowdsourcing and the subject of design.

Poster art developed slowly from a form of commercial advertising to its own artistic genre during the late 19th century. Posters enjoyed the addition of color printing, while books remains black and white in most cases. The poster design leader concentrated on a single, big, brightly colored, image that caught the viewers’ eyes. Any words written to give information about an event or product were kept to a minimum. The man heading up poster design capitalized on his awareness that capturing your viewer’s attention hinges upon simplicity and clarity. To that end, his colors were vivid and bright and his shapes were flat and uncomplicated. These lines could be called hesitant, and were sometimes fractured, a bit like an impressionist would create. It is these qualities that lead to this man’s work being hailed as the pioneer of the art nouveau design. The classic art nouveau posters are credited to this man’s work.

The very creator of the proper art nouveau poster used more fluid contours and stronger outlines in his distinctive illustrations. One artist created work which is noted for graceful, young girls with long hair and draped clothing, spreading out into interesting, beautiful forms. There was also a successful and famous art nouveau whose elegant posters featured rather narrow strips as well as a full length female figure. The intricate patterns were inspired by many diverse cultures such as Celtic motifs, Japanese wood cuts, Hebrew lettering, Arab and Moorish decorations, Byzantine mosaics and simple fold art.

Many reproductions of these artists exist in books and as lithographs or prints that are suitable for framing. Late 19th century and early 20th century poster art is available from dealers who specialize in it. If you travel to international antique shows, you can find their booths among the aisles. Many of the original pieces, still in excellent condition, are valued at hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
