Best way to learn a foreign language with programs…rosetta stone etc?
What is the best program to get to help with foreign languages. I want rosetta stone but i dont wanna spend 500$ if its not the best. I wanna learn Spanish French and Italian for my minors and majors for school/marketing. So has anyone tried any other programs or rosetta and loved it and learned a lot quick?? grazie!
I’ve taught English for eight years and studied loads of languages, with varying success. My biggest success is with Polish, because I went to live there. My worst is with French, because I tried only traditional methods.
I’ve used Rosetta Stone and it seems to be about the best there is and not very boring (trust me, language learning is long, so if it’s not interesting it WILL NOT work, no matter what your dedication).
However, you must always be suspicious when something advertises itself as being as good as learning the language naturally (i.e. through contact with locals).
I would recommend a shorter free program (I’ve used the BBC’s: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ ) and then use the language properly.
When I started learning German, I went on chat rooms or used messengers to write to Germans. It’s challenging but not too stressful as no-one can see your dictionary. If you get more advanced, you can start calling them up.
Having said all that, most people never complain about Rosetta Stone. Then again, most people, never finish it, either…
