Why Learn A Foreign Language In Us?

why learn a foreign language in us?
Why do you think so many Mexicans & Central Americans who move to the US refuse to learn English?

I moved to L.A. not that long ago and I’m seriously surprised how many Hispanics don’t know any English. I have friends whose parents have been here for 20 years, but they really do not speak a word of English. They say they don’t like the language.

But there are free classes for which they don’t even have to pay for. They are offered to them free of charge. I also think that there’s no need for them to learn any English because everything seems to be in Spanish. You even have to press 1 for English if you call a company.

I lived in a foreign country before and learned the language, so this doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I even speak some Spanish and liked Mexico when I went there, but I don’t understand how you can come to a country and refuse to learn the language. I’m not just talking about a few here. Otherwise all this stuff wouldn’t be in Spanish.

I think it’s funny how so many people focus solely on Hispanics/Latinos… when there is a huge population of Asians and people from the Middle East that also don’t speak English. So many times I’ve gone to a shop or a restaurant and it has been impossible to communicate, so I’ve had to find a person that could translate or pointed at the item I needed.

Did you know that the California Driver Handbook is available in nine languages: English, Armenian, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian and Punjabi?

Did you know that voter registration forms are printed in six languages other than English: Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Tagalog and Korean?

Sure Spanish is the most common language after English, but there are plenty of other nationalities that don’t bother to learn the language.
